The Original TLD’s (Top Level Domains)

These were the ‘original’ top level domains:

  • arpa (used for reverse lookups in DNS;  in-addr.arpa)
  • com – companies
  • net – networks
  • edu – educational institutions
  • org – non-corporate, non-govermental organizations
  • gov – U.S. Government

Why are they in English?  Because the Internet architeture was originally developed and conceived of in the United States, so names tended to follow U.S. English conventions.  Only recently have non-english top level domains been added.
