The size and shape of a mainboard is referred to as its 'form factor'. There are several standardized form factors in existence, starting with the earliest form factor, the AT all the way up to the more modern ATX shape. A form factor standardizes not only the length and width of the board, but where the external connectors are placed and where the holes for mounting are located.

Here are the most common standard form factors:

  • AT
  • LPX
  • NLX
  • WTXs
  • ATX
  • ATX-Riser
  • Baby ATX
  • Micro ATX
  • Flex ATX
