Compilers are used to turn high level programming languages into the binary machine code used by computers. Every programming language that produces binary machine code uses a compiler. Computers understand binary, humans understand English (well most do), it is easier for the human to write 'if X is true, do this; if Y is true, do that', than it is to write out a long string of zeroes and ones from memory.
