An internetwork, sometimes referred to as an internet, is a group of inter-connected networks. An internetwork is often called an internet or an intranet. The word 'internet' with a lowercase 'i' is different from the Internet with a capital 'I'. The captial 'I' is used because 'Internet' is the proper name of the world-wide group of all connected public networks. The term 'intranet' usually refers to an interconnected set of networks that are under private control. Data travels on networks in logical packets and logical packets are moved between networks via a device that uses a process called 'routing'. The special device that performs routing is called a router. Networks do not need routing, internetworks use routing. Networks are switched, not routed.
