Intrusion Protection Systems
Intrusion Protection Systems (IPS) are a more recent development than Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). Whereas an IDS detects unwanted activity an IPS detects unwanted activity and reacts to it. IDS is a passive system, IPS is an active system. An IPS goes further as it also is used to centralize access control across an entire organization whereas an IDS simply monitors activity. In recent years, IDS and IPS systems have begun to merge.
