Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) is a physical-layer fiber-optic communications technology used in North America for Wide-Area-Networking (WAN). SONET is a digital communications system using a hierarchichal multiplexing scheme and provides a compatible interface between North American and European digital multiplexing hierarchies.
