What is a token frame?
Token Ring and Token Bus use a very special frame called a 'token' to determine which end station has access to the network. It is from this token, and the method used to pass control from end station to end station using this token that Token Ring gets its name. Using this token-passing scheme, only one station attached to a network segment can transmit; all other stations must wait until it is done transmitting and passes the token to the next station.
What is the structure of a token frame?
A token frame contains three fields:
- Starting Delimiter (SDEL - 1 byte)
- Access Control (AC - 1 byte)
- Ending Delimiter (EDEL - 1 byte)
How is a token frame different from MAC frames?
From a usage standpoint, a token is used to control communication on the network. MAC frames are used to transmit data.
