An earth station is a building or compound where satellite communications occurs and in some cases, satellite command and control is also handled. An earth station contains all the equipment and systems necessary to communicate with the satellite. The earth station will have the following facilities:
- Radio Shack
- Wave Guide
- Antenna
- Backup Power
To function, an earth station must have a clear line of sight to the satellite so that transmission and receipt of signals is unobstructed and unimpeded. Earth stations are located in places where there is little chance of interferance from other terrestrial sources of radio signals and microwaves.
