Welcome to the next lesson in the CCNA Lessons Tutorial and Study Guide series.

The CCNA exam tests your knowledge of network types, uses, topologies and architectures, the network equipment used to build them, and the knowledge of how to build, configure and maintain internetworks.  You should be able to explain what each type of equipment will do and how it will improve the network.  You will need to know the benefits and drawbacks of each network type, the kinds of communications used in networks, the problems networks experience as they grow, how networks may be extended. Most importantly, you must understand how and when to segment networks into switched and routed domains to improve network performance using switching, VLANs and routing.   The process of understanding networking begins with understanding what networks are, how they are structured and how they work.

This tutorial begins the process by defining what a network is and explaining the common structures used by most networks, called “topologies”.  You will need to know the strengths and weaknesses of each of these network topologies to succeed with the CCNA exam.

Let’s move on to the definition of a network.

 Number Systems

Numbers are symbols that we use to represent quantities.  Binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal are four number systems used frequently in computing and networking.   This set of short tutorials on number systems will explore the binary, decimal and hexadecimal number systems. You will need to understand all of them for the CCNA exam, but most especially binary and hexadecimal.  Decimal is the human numbering system we display IPv4 addresses.  Binary is used for calculating network masks, hexadecimal is used to display Ethernet MAC addresses and IPv6 addresses.

The CCNA certification is the primary certification that managers look for when they hire Network Operations personnel.  According to GlassDoor.com, the median income for Network Engineers is just over $66,000 per year (2012), and more with a government clearance and a few years experience.   The CCNA exam is relatively inexpensive, and you can take the exam at any Cisco-authorized testing center. InetDaemon.Com has a full set of tutorials and guides to help you study for, and pass the CCNA are here at InetDaemon.Com.

Intro to the CCNA

Woke up this morning, turned on my kindle and Amazon pushed Kindle Software update version 3.4 to my Kindle 3G. Make sure your Kindle is plugged into wall power before updating your Kindle or you could have problems. My update went smoothly and I’ve noticed no problems so far this morning.
