The Edit menu contains the options for moving data around on the computer and between programs you are working in. Below is a screenshot of the Edit Menu from an iBook running OS9.
.
- Undo [CMD Z]
- The undo option undoes the previous action you took. If you cut something from a document, it puts it back. This option isn't always available.
- Cut
- The cut operation removes a selection from the active program window and places it in the clipboard. You lose whatever was in the clipboard when you do this.
- Copy
- The copy operation copies your selection to the clipboard, overwriting whatever was there. You lose whatever was in the clipboard when you do this.
- Paste
- This pastes whatever is in the clipboard into the active program window. If you paste a piece of an image or text onto the desktop, you get what is called a 'clipping'. Keep in mind that though you can nearly always cut, you can't always paste. Programs that handle text and words don't usually handle pictures and vice versa, so keep that in mind when you are working.
- Clear
- This clears the clipboard and deletes whatever is in it.
- Show Clipboard
- Your Apple will do its best to comply with this request, but there are things you can cut it can't display in the clipboard. However, this option allows you to see what you last stored in the clipboard using either copy or cut.
- Preferences
- This option allows you to access the preferences for any program that is currently active. Preferences alter the default behavior of the program and customize it to fit your needs. This is not an exclusive Mac function, its simply called 'options' on other operating systems. Make sure you select the correct program in the Finder first.
