The temporary filesystem is used for the storage of temporary operating system files that will not be needed the next time the computer is restarted. The /tmp directory exists in RAM on many file systems and is deleted when unmounted and the RAM is deprived of electricity.

Many administrators will use this directory to unzip or decompress installation files or archive bundles downloaded from the Internet . If something goes wrong, the system can always be restarted and the archive will automatically be deleted.
